Let Me Introduce Myself …

The hardest part about starting a blog is knowing where to start. I’ve been bouncing back and forth from idea to idea trying to figure out what my first blog should be about. Should I write about PCOS? Should I give some training tips? Should I write about the latest gymnastics news? Maybe you’re wondering what any of these subjects has to do with me. So I thought I should tell you all about myself. That way, you’ll be able to see how I got to where I am today and what I hope to blog about in the future.

I’m 24 years old now. I turn 25 in January (Happy Birthday to me). I grew up in East London with my parents and younger brother. Growing up, I would have been classed as a fussy eater. I’m sure many of you parents out there will be able to sympathise with my mum; trying to get your child to eat healthily when all they want to eat is cheese, chocolate and fish fingers (thankfully not in combination) and having to tell the waiter at a restaurant that your child wants spaghetti bolognaise without the bolognaise (basically plain spaghetti). Thankfully, I grew out of that phase and I love eating my vegetables now. Whether it was entirely because of my poor diet or other reasons, I grew up with weight issues. I was always chubbier than my friends despite taking part in regular exercise. My regular activities included dance classes (ballet, modern/freestyle and tap), swimming lessons, trampolining lessons, horse riding lessons and compulsory PE lessons at school (which were always fun). I also took ice skating lessons during the school holidays. But despite all this exercise, I was always overweight.

When I was 16 and left school, I decided that I wanted to try and lose weight before pursuing my BTEC Performing Arts course at Sixth Form. I made a few changes (calorie counting mainly) and managed to lose some weight. Eventually at age 17, I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and had to research and make further changes to help control the symptoms (I will go into further detail about PCOS in a future blog). I’m not going to lie, PCOS was difficult to live with which meant I had to do intense research to find the appropriate dietary changes I needed to make in order to live a healthier and happier life. Because of these changes, I have managed to lose over 3 stone and haven’t gained it back.

These days, I still like to keep myself as active as possible. I’m sure like most other people, I was inspired by the London 2012 Olympics. I was especially inspired by the gymnastics. I avidly watch all the major competitions in all the gymnastics disciplines. Two years ago at the age of 22, I decided to start adult gymnastics. Having never done any gymnastics as a child (apart from trampolining), this was quite daunting but I ended up falling in love with the sport more and more. I even competed in an adult competition a year later. I only competed on the floor exercise and I came 7th out of 13. For someone who had never done gymnastics, this was a huge achievement. Gymnastics made me aware of how little flexibility I had. When I started gymnastics, I couldn’t even touch my toes. I decided that I wanted to really work on this and I soon managed to achieve splits, backbends and many other bendy feats (as well as being able to finally touch my toes). But this wasn’t enough for me. I wanted to get as bendy as possible so this year, aged 24, I started taking contortion lessons and have built up skills I never thought I would be able to do. I carried on dancing and trampolining and recently got back into swimming after giving up lessons (the lessons were 8am on a Sunday morning – need I say more?). Because of my love of sport and dance, you may see the occasional blog with the latest competition and sporting/dance news (specifically gymnastics but I often catch a bit of diving, swimming and figure skating) as well as talk about my own training.

I decided that I wanted to work in the health and fitness industry so I decided to train as a personal trainer. After qualifying, I realised that my passion was in the nutrition side of it so I went on to study further and complete several diplomas in nutrition and here I am today.

So this blog gives me a chance to talk about the various areas and passions of my life; nutrition, fitness, health, sport, etc. I hope you enjoy all the blogs that are to come x
